Last week on Happy Hour, we talked about creating exit plans for people who are simply not feelin’ their job anymore and people who are seeking a marriage between their passion and their paycheck. Here’s a refresher in case you missed it:

“I don’t know what I want to do, but I know it’s not what I am doing”

“I want a job that I actually feel like I am doing something meaningful and purposeful, I just don’t know what that is”

“I have some ideas, but they probably won’t make any money so I can’t exactly quit my job and do my passion anyway.”

Do any of these phrases sound familiar? I get these responses all of the time from friends, clients and family members. There are so many “reasons” to remain unfulfilled in your life and career.  If you don’t know what to do, you should do nothing… right?

Wrong. I get it though, I do. I used to swear by these reasons and even sometimes now I find that an excuse is a temporary fix for my fear, laziness or lack of focus. Figuring out what you want can be an extensive process that takes time, patience and some serious self-reflection. The thing is, nothing feels better than making an empowered choice and taking action. Easier said than done, but knowing where to start might be just what you are seeking.

If you don’t know where to start when trying to figure out something as deep and as meaningful as your passion, let me guide you. Start by asking yourself the three questions below. Take your time and answer them fearlessly!

(If you already know what your passion is, just skip down to question #3 and spend some serious time there…)

1. How do you want to make a difference in the world?

2. If nothing was stopping you, what would you do?

3. By taking action on your passion, what is the worst that could happen? The best thing that could happen?
